and impetuous, the observer is discerning and thoughtful. The ego likes to react immediately, whereas the observer takes a moment to process and respond thoughtfully.

Sometimes, we can easily identify when the ego is taking over—like when we find ourselves enraged, jealous, or overly emotional. Other times, it’s not so easy. Here are a few ways to identify the voice of the ego:

d The ego delivers rapid-fire thoughts and ideas, one after another. Do your thoughts quickly flood your mind?

d The ego is characterized by a premise of separation. Review the messages from your thoughts. Do they further separate you from others?

d The ego operates primarily from a place of fear, anger, bitterness, and insecurity. Does the voice you hear have any of these qualities in the undertone of its message to you?

When you find that your thoughts are ego-derived, take a few deep breaths. Allow your body to relax. This will calm your nervous system and send a message to the ego that you hear it and will consider its message. As the tension in your body settles, it will become easier for you to observe the experience in the present moment, helping you feel at ease and think more clearly.
